Confessions of a Bad Baker

Before I get to this morning’s post I want to share something kind of cool. Remember a few months ago when I attended a Lewis Black Comedy show? I wrote a review for my friend Teresa’s Magazine and a few weeks ago the Hanover Theatre (the venue) actually contacted her and asked if they could use my review on their website! πŸ™‚ Teresa contacted me last night to let me know it’s been posted! Cool huh?

Ok back to this morning’s post.

Last night I mentioned that I did a little baking after work. Well this was actually day 2 of a bake-fest that was quite embarrassing and frustrating! I have mentioned before that I am a terrible baker. Remember those Cake pops?

….and the hockey pucks brownies?

I am impatient. I LOVE to cook because all you do is mix stuff together until it tastes good. Baking is just too precise for me,  and I NEVER get it right. Except when it comes to breads. That seems to be ok.

So on Friday as I was opening my presents, there were many comments made such as “We better reap the benefits of these baking dishes!”

I graciously smiled and through my teeth said “You bet!” but in my head was thinking “I may get fired if I do.”  But a promise is a promise so I opened our recipe book to the very limited baking section and picked out something simple. I also had these babies…

…layin around that were on their last leg so I went with a recipe I have tried before and LOVED that I found on Courtney’s blog. (Check out her page for the full recipe)

The main ingredients are bananas, oatmeal, and chocolate chips, all of which I had on hand. Here is a little photo-timeline for ya. (IDK what I would do without my Magic Bullet).

Healthy-ish, delicious cookies! I was pumped when they came out well and then…it happened.

I got cocky. I admit it.  I did the dumbest thing a bad baker can do and tried to wing a recipe.

**Nolan would like me to take this time to acknowledge the fact that he was trying to talk me out of it the whole time but I wouldn’t listen. I don’t know if it was the baker’s high or the Benadryl blocking my brain cells but I would not back down.**

Hahaha I wish I had taken pics of this process but to paint you a good mental image, the results were light brown lumps of inedible awfulness. What was I thinking?!

So yesterday after job #2 I went to the supermarket, swallowed my pride, and left it in the hands of a true expert. I bought a Betty Crocker mix as I should have done in the beginning. The result was MUCH more pleasant πŸ™‚

Delicious peanut butter cookies with Hershey’s Kisses! I put them in my new baking pan and packed them up for work today as a nice thank you to the staff.

TA DA!  Ugh. Needless to say I promised Nolan I would stick to cooking for a while πŸ™‚

What is your favorite cookie recipe?

Do you prefer to bake or cook?

  1. I legit just LOL’d so loudly at the photo of Nolan with the brownie. HAHA! I’m not horrible at baking but I try not to keep baked goods in my house because they are like crack to me. I work from home too so it’s not like I can bring them anymore. Those peanut butter cookies with the kisses? I really would eat like 50 of them. Cooking has become much more of a skill I’ve tried hard to get the hang of over the past year or so. To me cooking is more stressful…I’ve had a lot of dinners gone bad 😦 I always tell Tony that whenever I cook something new, if it’s awful, he reserves the right to order a pizza. (And he’s had to do it before. More than once.)

    • We all have our strengths and weaknesses! Nolan will never let me forget that brownie incident. Sooo bad. So, so bad. I am thinking of taking a baking class at the local technical high school to get better. I really need to find out some basic baking recipes and just add in random ingredients. Does Tony cook??? Most of my cooking skills come from my dad and Nolan. They are both great in the kitchen πŸ™‚

  2. Congrats on the article! That is exciting! πŸ™‚ Those cookies look delicious! I have had a cake pop fail too. I hope to try making them again because I now have a cake pop maker. I’ll have to let you know how they turn out.

  3. I consider myself to be a talented baker but one time I attempted cake pops and they came out TERRIBLE! I mean, they were delicious, but they looked awful. I think the issue was I used too much frosting and didn’t let them cool off so they were just big gooey balls. Your cookies look delicious though! πŸ™‚

    • I made the same mistake! I used almost twice as much frosting as you are apparently supposed to use and as you can see it was a disaster. They were delicious but terrible to look at. I am soo gald to hear I’m not the only one πŸ™‚
